Partial Index to Tennessee Death Records 1914-1925
PLEASE NOTE: The Statewide Index to Tennessee Death Records now covers the years 1914-1925. The Partial Index to Tennessee Death Records -- which covers only 37 counties and does not include children under two years of age -- will be removed in the near future. Tennessee birth and death registration officially began in 1908, but it was not until 1914 that the death certificate form included such genealogically important information as the person's date and place of birth, and parents' names. The Cleveland (Tennessee) Public Library's project to publish abstracts of Tennessee death records began in 1990. Since then, their staff and volunteers have published the 1914-1925 death records of thirty-three counties. It should be noted that the records of children under two years of age have been omitted from this project. Edna Wiefering, the volunteer who spearheads the project, and the Cleveland Public Library generously offered to permit the State Library and Archives to mount the indexes to these records on its web site. These indexes contain the name, age, year of death, county and certificate number for each individual. The cause of death has been indicated on some records. Where the age of the individual is not given, notes have been added to indicate the person's occupation or marital status. The books from which this information was taken can be purchased from the Cleveland Public Library. Copies of original death certificates can be purchased from the Tennessee State Library and Archives. A sample death certificate is available for viewing on our web site. The Tennessee State Library and Archives has state-wide death records for the years 1908-1912 and 1914-1956. This index, however, covers only thirty-seven counties in Tennessee for the years 1914-1925. Counties not listed below have not been included in the Cleveland Public Library's project. There are no plans to add additional counties at this time.
