Stereo Microscope in UseRegulatory Services has two major responsibilities -- checking the quality of agricultural inputs for the benefit of agricultural production activities and assuring the quality of agricultural outputs in the interest of consumer protection, public safety and a fair marketplace.

From sampling the quality of feeds, seeds and fertilizers and protecting livestock health to registering pesticides and inspecting dairy farms, these and other regulatory services assure the integrity of the food chain. They perform the fundamental and practical function of assuring farmers of a market for their products and assuring consumers of products consistent in quality and safety.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture is also a consumer protection agency which plays a significant part in the health, safety and welfare of every Tennessean. TDA enforces a variety of "truth in labeling" laws and regulations which may include implicit and explicit quality and quantity guarantees.

This area includes services related to dairy, food, drugs, petroleum, and weights and measures. The regulatory activities of these areas provide for the monitoring of agriculture production inputs, vigilance of the effectiveness of quality controls employed during the process of adding value to agricultural commodities, then verifying accurate labeled information provided to the consumer in order to allow an informed, conscientious purchase which will be safe and effective for the consumer. These activities also allow
Tennessee products to be shipped freely into the marketplace throughout the nation and abroad. The department is involved with many areas which affect our everyday lives--from the field to the table--policing a sundry of staples necessary to improve and sustain the quality of life.
