Once your application and papers have been sent to the State Board for approval, you will need to contact PSI to schedule your exam.

will send you an admission letter listing the date and time of the
examination.
Examination Attendance
Prepare and bring the following materials to the examination:
- Admission letter with corrections, if any
- Photo ID-Driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID, or signed and notarized photo
- Materials for the practical examination
as listed in the candidate information brochure
- Clothing-Arrive with a neat,
clean appearance. You must wear a smock. Do not wear any mark
or uniform of a school or any personal identification. If your
smock has your name on it, please cover it with tape. You must
not wear open-toed shoes.
Arrive at the examination site before the examination start time
listed on the admission letter to allow time for the admission procedure. |

- Review the personal information listed on the
admission letter. If you have any changes, please call PSI
at (800) 733-9267.
- If a visual or physical disability or other
special need prevents you from taking the examination under
regular conditions, you may request special arrangements. Please
submit written documentation of your disability to help PSI
determine the arrangements to be made. PSI complies with
the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Rescheduling
If you cannot attend your scheduled
examination date or fail to appear for your scheduled examination,
PSI will reschedule you for the next available date. You must
submit an additional $15.00 rescheduling fee for this service.
Examination Results
- As of January 1, 1997 same day
scoring is available. If you receive a passing score on both
parts of the exam, you will receive information on obtaining
your license. If you do not pass both parts, you will receive
information for retaking those parts.
For confidentiality, scores will not
be given over the telephone.

MASTER BARBER EXAMINATION
Please bring the following items to the examination:
Theory
Two sharpened, number-two pencils
1. Equipment and Supplies
Blow dryer
Adjustable clippers, T-edgers
Straight razor, blades, and shaving cream
Combs, hairbrush, shears
Hair cloth, neck strip, and smock
Six to eight (minimum) clean towels
Shampoo and conditioner
Five permanent rods and retention papers
Plastic bag for wet towels
Dry sanitation supplies
Aftershave, Face cream, Astringent,Powder
Gloves

2. Model or mannequin with
at least four inches of hair.
You
must bring a live model for the practical portion of your
examination. All models must be male and at least 16 years
of age.
Models may not be an owner of a barber school
or college of barbering, a barber student, barber instructor,
master barber or applicant for examination. |

Practical
The barber practical examination is performed using a live model.
The examination consists of six sections and lasts approximately
three hours.
1. Appearance
No open-toed shoes.
2. Haircut (40 minutes)
Using scissor, razor, and clippers, perform a standard tapered
haircut, removing at least 1/8" of hair.
3. Blow drying (15 minutes)
Demonstrate proper blow-drying techniques.
4. Mock shave procedures and strokes (30 minutes)
Demonstrate a shave with emphasis placed on patron protection
and sanitation.
5. Facial (15 minutes)
Demonstrate draping and simulated facial manipulations.
6. Permanent waving (15 minutes)
Wrap at least four rods on one section of the head.

The barber technician examination is performed using a live model.
The examination lasts ap proximately 1 1/2 hours. It consists of four
sections:

- Coloring (simulated-aniline derivative)

Practical Examination Outline
The instructor practical examination is performed
in a classroom setting and lasts approximately I 1/2 hours. A specific
assignment will be mailed to you ten days in advance of your scheduled
examination date.
1. Lesson Plan: Prepared in advance.
Develop step-by-step plan for conducting
a class using appropriate principles of learning, motivation,
presentation, application, and evaluation.
2. Theory Presentation.
25-30 minutes
Present theory lecture showing proper
implementation of lesson plan. You are graded on proper procedure
and content, presentation and communication skills, and use of
appropriate teaching methods. Requires the use of adequate instructional
aids.
3. Demonstration
30 minutes
Perform demonstration technique for
teaching manipulative skills. You are graded for procedure, technical
skill, content, and delivery.
