Announcement: We Moved!
The Board for Licensing Contractors was established in 1931 and strives to assure quality and fair construction practices exist in all phases of the industry, in order to protect the safety and welfare of the public, through the regulation of contracting. Licenses with the Contractors Board are regulated and required at various levels: Contractor license is required for projects in excess of $25,000; Home Improvement license is required for projects from $3,000 to less than $24,999 (in certain counties); less than $25,000, a license is required for electricians (LLE) and plumbers (LLP); Contractor exam course providers must be approved by the Board; and Medical Gas certification providers. Note: State requirements do not exempt local government regulations. Always check with the local municipalities for their license and permit requirements. In addition, you may need licenses and/or certifications from other state agencies. Please see our “Valuable Resources” section on the web for further guidance.

Download forms and instructions to obtain or revise a license (raise limit, add classes, change mode of operation, etc.) Contractor - Licensing for projects $25,000 or more (Types of Contractors include: Building (Residential, Commercial, Industrial); Electrical (low voltage/computer cabling/audio visual); Mechanical; Plumbing; HVAC; Highway, Railroad & Airport; Municipal Utility; Environmental; Specialty; Landscaping; Excavation, etc. *See list of license classifications.) Subcontractors - Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical subcontractors are required to obtain a "contractor's" license. Licenses for projects less than $25,000 Note: Always check with the local municipalities for their license and permit requirements!
Note: Low Voltage Security Camera /CCTV and Alarm Systems are required to obtain a license with the Alarm Board, regardless of the cost amount!
NOTE: Fire Sprinkler contractors must also obtain a license with the Fire Marshal's office.
NEW! Effective July 1, 2008, HVAC contractors bidding Geothermal projects may need to list their TDEC license classification on the outside of the bid envelope. Medical Gas

Licenses are searchable online by name as licensed, only. This site does not allow searches by the individual owner names, if they use a company name. May also utilize "Downloadable Reports" to search licensees.
