There are several different types of health insurance policies available in Tennessee, ranging from a comprehensive policy to a more limited major medical policy. Click here [pdf] for a list of the types of health insurance policies and examples of what they may cover.

  • Press Release HIPAA Health Insurance Policies Available to Former TennCare Enrollees.
  • Under state and federal law - called HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) - certain "eligible" individuals cannot be denied health insurance even if they have pre-existing conditions. Click here for the Department's legal bulletin on HIPAA.
  • If you do not have access to health insurance through your employer or your spouse's employer, you still may be eligible to purchase an individual policy. You may purchase these policies by contacting your insurance agent, or the companies directly. Click here [pdf] for a list of the companies who offer these individual policies in Tennessee.
