Many are surprised to hear that the Tennessee Department of
Correction is looking for a few good nurses. The fact is correctional medicine
is a truly rewarding career. The department
currently employs about 12 nurse clinicians, 140 registered nurses and 250
licensed practical nurses' that work diligently to save lives and maintain the
health of our 19,000 inmates.
The scope of services offered by TDOC is also broader than you
might expect. Not only do TDOC nurses administer medication, work with
chronically ill inmates, answer sick calls and conduct routine medical exams,
but they are also responsible for providing first aid/emergency care for
employees, volunteers and visitors of the prison. With the aging inmate
population on the rise, the need for trained nurses at all of our facilities
continues to rise as well.
While nursing opportunities exist at all TDOC prisons, a vast
majority of the jobs are centralized at Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs
Facility,
which caters to inmates facing long-term illnesses. Click
