Tour of Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility

If you've ever wanted to see the inside of a prison without having to stay... here's your chance.  The Department of Correction has added to its Web site a virtual tour of the DeBerry Special Needs Facility (DSNF) in Nashville.

DeBerry Special Needs Facility is located approximately ten minutes from downtown Nashville and is the state's only prison dedicated to housing inmates in need of continuing and acute medical care.  It isn't uncommon to have as many as 700 inmates staying at the facility at any one time.  In recent years, a growing elderly population in the prison system has forced the number of inmates housed at this facility to go up.

Get a glimpse of this unique hospital setting prison and how inmates spend their time behind bars.

Clinic

The clinic at DSNF serves as a primary care-unit for outside physicians and staff to examine and treat inmates from across the state.  A monthly provider schedule is established and inmates are scheduled for initial and follow-up consultations based on physicians recommendations.

Dental Clinic

With a full-time dentist and dental assistant, our dental clinic provides on-site services to inmates who require routine dental care such as fillings, extractions and denture maintenance.

Health Center Intake

The Health Center intake area is the receiving unit for all inmates who come to DSNF for consultative and follow-up care from all of the state prisons throughout Tennessee.  All inmates are received and processed through this area prior to being assigned a cell for their stay at DSNF.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy space is located on the ground floor of the health center, approximate to the general clinic area.  Inmates who require therapeutic support after orthopedic procedures, strokes and other debilitating events can receive therapy if approved by the physician.

Unit3&4

DSNF has two buildings on-site (3 & 4) which house the working inmates.  These inmates provide a variety of basic maintenance services and support to the on-going upkeep of the DeBerry Special Needs Facility.  The inmates also work in the kitchen and laundry area serving the basic needs of the inmates housed at DSNF.

Main Compound/Yard

DSNF is located at the end of Cockrill Bend Boulevard, Nashville, Tennessee.  It resides on 36 acres, which abuts to the Cumberland River.  All general traffic, deliveries and ambulances pass through the main sally port.  Employees and staff proceed through central checkpoint located in the general administrative area.
