The Tennessee Department of Correction fulfills its obligation to
safeguard the public by housing inmates in secured institutional
settings. There are currently 13 prisons in the TDOC system; one
is managed by a private firm. Two other private facilities house
state inmates.
In 1997, several facilities in the TDOC system were combined to
create greater efficiency and to reduce operational costs. The
number of prisons in the system at that time was reduced from 20 to
13.
