STATEMENT FROM ACTING CORRECTION COMMISSIONER GAYLE
RAY REGARDING DEATH OF CORRECTIONAL OFFICER WAYNE MORGAN
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Wayne Morgan's family and
friends after this morning's senseless killing in Roane County.
The Department of Correction shares their sorrow as one of our officers
sacrificed his life in the line of duty. All too often
correctional officers are the forgotten heroes in their daily service of
ensuring public safety.
Officer Morgan exemplified that dedication with 28 years
of service to the Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex and the State of
Tennessee. His correctional family extended beyond his co-workers
to his brother, niece, nephew and his nephew's wife who also served with
him at Brushy Mountain. We offer them our condolences during this
difficult time and thank them for their service.
Officer Morgan's partner this morning was Officer Larry
Harris. I want to acknowledge the courage he displayed outside the
courthouse and thank him for his efforts.
