TDOC AWARDS GRANT TO LUNG ASSOCIATION

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Department of Correction has awarded a grant in the amount of $10,000 to the American Lung Association of Tennessee.  The funds will be used to assist the department in the Freedom from Smoking campaign in all TDOC prisons, the academy and central office.

"Recognizing how addictive tobacco use is, we want to make sure staff and inmates have the tools they need to kick the habit successfully," said Commissioner George Little.  The ALA will assist in the implementation of a comprehensive smoking cessation program.  "We see this as the right thing to do for the taxpayers of Tennessee, for staff and inmates," said Little.  "By eliminating smoking in all TDOC facilities and grounds, we anticipate immediate cost savings to the department and long-term cost savings to the state."

All TDOC facilities became tobacco free in July, 2007.
