Tennessee Science and Technology Advisory Council
Tennessee's Science and Technology Advisory Council was established in May 1993. The purpose of this Council is to advise state government on science and technology matters of importance to the State of Tennessee, its citizens, industries, and universities. The Council reports both to the Governor's office and to the state legislature and can be asked to study appropriate issues by either or both bodies. The main liaison to the executive branch of the state government is through the Office of Science and Technology of the Department of Economic and Community Development. In the legislative branch, Speakers John S. Wilder (Senate) and Jimmy Naifeh (House) are the main contacts, with Senators Ben Atchley and Douglas Henry and Representative Matthew Kisber maintaining close relationships with the work of the Council.

The nine members of the Council are appointed by the Governor and two speakers. Governor Don Sundquist serves as the Council chairman. The full membership of the Council is listed below:

Duty and Function of the Council:

Advise the Governor, the General Assembly, and the Commissioner of Economic and Community Development:

  1. On the establishment of the state's scientific and technological goals.
  2. Regarding the best scientific and technological development to spur job creation and growth.
  3. Regarding the technological initiatives that can be transferred into the public or private sectors.
