Tennessee Honors Program

The Tennessee Department of Education is once again sponsoring the Tennessee Honors Program.  The program is based upon two and one half (2.5) years of high school work for juniors, directs attention to students whose achievements have been outstanding and encourages excellence among all high school students.  DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS IS FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 2007.  Results of the competition will be announced the week of April 23.  All applications meeting the requirements will be reviewed by the State content consultants and a selection of the top ten will be chosen.  If applications are limited, the consultant will determine a representative number based on the quality of the applications.  A committee of content specialists in all subject areas will be convened to determine the final selection of thirty winners (five per content area).  The thirty winners and their parents/guardians will be invited to a reception hosted by the Commissioner of Education.  Each winner will receive a certificate of recognition by the Governor and an Apple Ipod.

The Tennessee Honors Program is a unique opportunity for outstanding juniors not only to receive recognition for their academic and extra-curricular achievements, but also to demonstrate their ability to synthesize their knowledge of the various disciplines by applying it to the resolution of a specific problem.  The student is challenged to research a given issue, develop a hypothesis supported by evidence, and draw a conclusion.  Grade point averages, programs of study, extra-curricular participation, accolades, and the independent research weigh heavily in the decisions of the judges.

Each interested and qualified student should complete the enclosed application, develop the independent research project and submit it with any supporting evidence of accomplishments consistent with the instructions.  Since these applications will be reviewed and screened by a panel of educators, nomination of students does not imply automatic listing in the Honors Class.

We commend this opportunity to you, and hope you will encourage qualified students to make application.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Please make sure that students answer the research questions provided in this packet.
