Health Science Education Course Descriptions

Health Science Education *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 9-12

No Prerequisite.  This course is an introduction to broad standards that serve as a foundation for Health Care Occupations and functions across health services.  Units included are academics in health care communications systems, legal responsibilities, ethics, teamwork, and safety practices.

Anatomy and Physiology *137 to 180 Hours One Credit

Grades 10-12

Designed for students to develop an understanding and functioning of the human body. This course may serve as a science credit if the teacher is highly qualified.

Medical Therapeutic *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 10-12
No Prerequisite.  This course provides knowledge and skills to maintain or change to the health status of an individual over time.  This could include careers such as dental, dietetics, medical assistance, home health, nursing, pharmacy, respiratory, social work, nutritionist, Physician, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Veterinarian, Gerontology Service Provider, Medical Practice owner, Attorney for health care, and others.
Diagnostic Medicine *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 10-12

No Prerequisite.  Diagnostic medicine creates a picture of an individual’s health status at a single point in time.  This could include careers as cardiology, imaging, medical laboratory, radiography, nuclear medicine, sterotactic radiosurgery, speech pathologists, respiratory therapist, clinical laboratory technician, pathologists, medical doctor Histotechnologist, Orthotist, Plastic Surgeon, Prosthetist, Prosthodonist,  and others.

Health Informatics *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 10-12
No Prerequisite.  This course will provide knowledge of ways to document an individual care in the home, hospital, long term care, outpatient, and others.  Careers could include medical records, health management, risk management, unit coordinator, computer operator.  social worker, patient advocate, hospital chaplain, clinical department director, community services specialist Computer Security Specialist, Data analyst, Epidemiologist, Health Writer, Medical Librarian, Medical Video Produce  and others.
Support Services *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 10-12

No Prerequisite.  In this course you will learn knowledge and skills necessary to provide an environment for the delivery of health care.  Careers could include central supply, facility maintenance, food services, interior decorating, housekeeping, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, Biomedical Technician and others.

Rehabilitative Therapies *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 11-12

No Prerequisite.  This course will focus on enabling the person to live to the fullest capacity possible.  Units will include sports medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech / language therapy, sports medicine, art, music, dance therapy, and others.

Emergency Medical Services *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 11-12

Design for students who are interested in becoming an Emergency Room Physician, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or Emergency Room Nurse.

Clinical Internship *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 11-12

Students may choose to complete a clinical internship after completing Medical Therapeutics, Diagnostic Medicine, Health Informatics, Support Services, Rehabilitative Therapies, Nursing Education, or Emergency Medical Services.  The internships are designed to be completed in a hospital, nursing home, rehab center, medical office, or other health care facility.

Nursing Education *137 to 180 Hours One Credit Grades 11-12
Consists of 18 units of study dealing with direct bedside nursing care.  Clinical experience will consist of supervised practice in the nursing home as well as demonstrations in the classroom. Students can be registered by Tennessee Department of Health after the completion of the course; 100 hours clinical and theory, passing a state test (both written and skills) and will be job ready.  Students may complete a clinical internship following this course.  Jobs include Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, Nurse Anesthetist, Forensic Nurse and others.
Biomedical Applications *137 to 180 Hours One Credit

Grades 11-12

This course provides an overview of biomedical research applications.  Topics covered will include understanding laboratory procedures fundamental to biomedical research which include recombinant DNA, protein purification, cell and tissue culture.  Additional topics include communication skills, the history and development of the field of biomedical research and understanding the legal environment and technology transfer aspects of biomedical research.  Jobs include  Jobs include research as a medical doctor or a PhD, Biochemist, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Chemist, Biostatistician, Cell Biologist, Clinical Trials Research, Geneticist, Lab Assistant – Genetics, Lab Technician, Microbiologists, Molecular Biologist, Pharmaceutical Scientist, Quality Assurance professional, Quality Control Professional, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Research Scientist, Toxicologist or a Biomedical Engineer, Biomedical patent attorney and others.
Forensic Science *137 – 180 Hours   One Credit    Grades 11-12
This course is an overview of how science is applied to solving crimes.  Topics including history of forensic sciences, collecting of evidence, analyzing results and hands-on applications of many laboratory techniques used in solving crimes and identifying people and future careers.  Students will participate in a mock (staged) crime scene to apply knowledge and skills gained.  Jobs include forensic nurses, odontologists, pathologists, psychiatrists, crime scene investigators, medical examiners/coroners, forensic technicians, criminalists, toxicologists, wildlife specialists, forensic engineers, accountants, computer specialists, aviation and construction accident investigators, forensic photographers, skull reconstructionists, document and polygraph examiners.
