Formation

The following outline is a suggested sequence of activities in the establishment of a committee:

  • Secure approval and cooperation of the school board and the administration.
  • Request from school board, a policy statement regarding the goals and purposes of the advisory committee and its function. The statement should:
    • Recognize the committee as an integral part of the Vocational Education program.
    • Designate purposes of committee
    • Determine organizational and operational procedures of the committee such as selection and number of members, term of appointments, number of meetings, etc.
  • Select members and send letters of appointment. The following criteria should be kept in mind in selecting and inviting individuals to serve on an occupational education advisory committee:
Competence
Choose skilled craftsmen who are recognized as leaders by their co-workers.
Choose people actively engaged in their trade or occupation
Interest
Choose people who are committed to their work
Adequate Time
Choose people who are willing to accept the responsibility and will be able to give the time.
