Free Surplus Computer Program

Tennessee schools and school districts are invited to participate in the state's Free Surplus Computer Program, receiving refurbished computers from various state agencies.

The surplus computers are subject to the laws, rules and procedures pertaining to state surplus property. The Correction, Education and General Services departments administer program and donate the devices to schools and districts who submit requests.

Minimum Standards for Computers

Desktops:

  • Pentium 4+ CPU
  • 80+ GB HDD
  • 1+ GB RAM
  • 2.8+ GHz single core
  • 1.6+ GHz dual core

Notebooks:

  • Pentium 4+ CPU
  • 60+ GB HDD
  • 1+ GB RAM
  • 1.8+ GHz dual core

 

Procedures for Requesting Refurbished Computers

An official of the school or school district should write a letter on letterhead to the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education, Kevin Huffman or contact Gomer Pascual at Gomer.Pascual@tn.gov or (615) 532-9514 to request the computers.

The request must include the following information:

  • Number in multiples of 20 systems and rationale for requested computers
  • Contact name, phone number, e-mail address
  • Location and phone number of the school where the computers will be located
  • Declaration that the systems will be placed in use within 4 months of receipt, retained for at least one year thereafter, used for educational purposes, and picked up within 30 days of allocation notification.

Allocation Notification and Pickup

Requests that meet these minimum requirements will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. The allocation notification will be sent via fax or email. A copy of the allocation notification must be presented at the warehouse for release of the computer lot(s).

These computers must be picked up at the Department of General Services Property Utilization Division warehouse at 6500 Centennial Blvd., Nashville, TN, 37243 (phone (615) 350-3373) between 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
