Enhancing
Education Through Technology
Federal
Grants for Education Technology
in Tennessee
Title
II Part D of No Child Left Behind: "EdTech"
The principal goal of the Educational Technology State Grants Program is to improve student academic achievement through the use of technology in elementary and secondary schools. In addition, it is also designed to assist every student in becoming technologically literate by the end of eighth grade and to encourage the effective integration of technology resources and systems with teacher training and professional development to establish research-based instructional models. The programs targets funds primarily to school districts that serve concentrations of poor students.
50% percent of Title IID funds are allocated annually on a formula basis to all of Tennessee’s school districts. The remaining 50% of the funds are used to implement a special discretionary program that develops, implements, and evaluates virtual high school courses for Tennessee students. This program, e4TN, provides a development grant to Hamilton County Schools to develop and evaluate these virtual high school courses. There are seven beta sites including Lake County Schools, Bedford County Schools, Wilson County Schools, Bradley County Schools, Kingsport City Schools, Tipton County Schools, and Dickson County Schools. These seven beta sites and Hamilton County Schools offer virtual courses to their secondary students and serve as evaluation sites for the developed courses.
