sandwiches. After we snack, we will demonstrate how to use our astronaut experience, a digital camera, and
the free software Microsoft Photo Story to strengthen sequencing, vocabulary and writing skills. We will also
make ties to math and science curriculum standards. This is a perfect session for those looking for technology
integration ideas or professional development activities for your system.

Presentation Title: Giving Middle School Students A Chance to Get It Right!
This session describes a middle school intervention program that was designed to provide academic and
behavior support for students who repeatedly demonstrate behaviors that negatively impact the learning
environment. A collaboration between Principals, Central Office Personnel and University of Memphis Fellows
from Fayette and Shelby County Schools, the In School Intervention Program (ISIP) gives students a chance
to “get it right” before receiving a long-term suspension and/or being referred to alternative school. An
overview of the pilot program and its components will be presented as well as implications and suggestions for
middle school leaders, educators, and counselors.

Presentation Title: Pathways to College and High-Quality Jobs for At-Risk High Schoolers
This presentation describes how career and technical education (CTE) can retain at-risk students in high
school, lead to completion of programs at community and 4-year colleges, and raise earnings. Evidence will
come from a Gates Foundation project that followed 500,000 Florida high school students into college and
into the workforce over an 11-year period. The impact of completing various specific CTE courses will be
examined for students who completed, and did not complete, Algebra I.
