  Low-income students are eligible to receive free, after-school Supplemental Educational Services (SES) if

  around the nation including uptake and attendance, and research on the connection between SES and
  student achievement.  Second, we will review results from an investigation into the relationship between SES
  and student achievement in Metro-Nashville Public Schools.

  Presentation Title:   Math Challenge Tasks - Increasing Motivation for Learning and
                                           Achievement in Mathmatics in Tennessee Schools.
  In this session, ETS will team with local TN educators to discuss the SITES-M (Strengthening Instruction in the
  TN Elementary Schools - Mathematics) Grant Project dedicated to strengthening mathematics instruction in
  TN elementary schools.  The instructional strategies used in this grant project are based on the formative
  assessment techniques (developed by British researcher and educator, Dr. Dylan Wiliam) that take place day-
  to-day, lesson-by-lesson and quite literally moment-by-moment.  Dr. Wiliam's ideas were to train teachers to
  do what the most skilled teachers do almost "instinctively;" that is, to ask questions and notice nonverbal cues
  that give an idea of who understands the concepts being taught and to correct the deficiencies almost "on the
   spot."   Participants will be shown "Math Challenge" materials and how they are being used in classrooms, as
  well as, receive information about free mathematics workshops available to TN educators.

  Newsweek reports that on average, teachers lose 5-9 hours of instructional time per week dealing with low
  level discipline issues.  This session will provide powerful, proven techniques to eliminate repeated warnings
  and multiple requests, creating an atmosphere with drastically reduced classroom struggles and teacher
  frustration.  Participants will learn proven strategies to truly be the CEO of their class, to mean what they say
  and be in control without losing control when dealing with disruptive behavior.

  Presentation Title:   Title I Distinguished Schools Panel - Principal Leadership
  The purpose of the Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program is to (1) identify schools that ensure all
  children have access to effective instructional strategies and challenging academic content and (2)
  demonstrate success that all children make significant progress towards learning that content.   Four schools
  in Tennessee have been recognized as Title I Distinguished Schools for 2007-2008, two national awardees
  and two state awardees.  This session will allow the principals of the awarded schools to share instructional
  strategies used at their individual schools.  These are Title I elementary schools with grade spans from PK – 8.

  This session provides an overview of a research-based program for proactively beginning the school year.  It

  and professional satisfaction in teaching.  Used both as a program for whole-school community-building and
  for new teacher induction, this one-day workshop with follow-up leads teachers step-by step in planning the
  first three days of school, getting off to a good start, and reflecting on their efforts.

  skilled/high wage jobs.  Tennessee’s future depends on two things: first, we must produce high school
  graduates who are prepared for post secondary training and second, we must at least double the number of
  people earning a post secondary credential.

  Intervention.  Participants will learn how to measure and graph student learning while gaining a better
  understanding of commerically prepared tools.  The link between results of progress monitoring and the
  planning of interventions will be emphasized.  This will be a "hands-on" session.

  One of the greatest challenges for a school district is to create successful transitions between tiers. 
  Participants will learn how Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is facilitating the transition from K-4
  balanced literacy to 5-8 comprehensive literacy.  The MNPS K-12 Literacy Framework includes the elements
  of reading language arts instruction, intervention, and examples of resources necessary to promote student
  achievement.  This presentation will focus on steps taken, implementation of reserch-based instructional
  practices, professional development, improved parental communication, and challenges.

  NCLB has introduced an unprecedented requirement for educational data to help address accountability

  practice.  A large part of this move is to use data to effectively inform practice.  This presentation will discuss
  the use of compliance and accountability data, and data to improve teaching and learning.  It will address the
  many challenges to and opportunities for data use.

  leveled content. These personalized guides help educators support the individual learning needs of their
  students, giving them the tools they need to differentiate instruction, understand the assessment data,
  reinforce the content standards, and help students become self-directed learners.

  Critical thinking skills are not natural.  They need to be taught and developed.  Traditionally, we have focused
  on knowledge level questions that have students memorize or recall.  For our students to be successful and
  productive citizens, we need to change our instruction to encourage and promote higher levels of thinking. 
  This session will demonstrate how higher levels of thinking can be incorporated into state learning standards
  through questions and activities from the different levels.

  Sullivan County has used predictive benchmark tests to achieve NCLB improvement and guide instruction.
  This year begins the district use of the same benchmark tests and  progress monitoring  to address  RTI
  components.  Presentation will  address: (a) How do teams use data for Tier 2/3 identification? (b) How do
  school teams select interventions and probes to measure progress and make decisions on where students
  need to improve?  (c) How has it worked? Practitioners who work directly with RTI will be available to share
  and answer questions.

  Presentation Title:   Best Practices in Character Education: Ideas for Implementing Character
                                           Education in Your Schools
  Per guidelines in TCA 49-6-1007, the Department's goal is to recognize and disseminate information about
  schools that have developed model instructional methods and administrative policies for the delivery of
  character education.  Representatives from the Best Practices in Character Education Merit schools will share
   information with participants regarding their efforts in addressing bullying prevention strategies, conflict
  resolution skills, incorporating character ed across the curriculum, services learning projects and increasing
  parent/community involvement.  The session will also provide information on the Character Education Quality
  Standards and information on training opportunities and free materials.

  Presentation Title:   Self-Determination and Career Planning Model Incorporated in Tennessee
                                           Schools
  Eighth grade students make a leap to the transition process when they begin planning for high school.
  Findings prove that students need self-determination skills to become fully involved and interested in the
  transition process. Participants will hear how students, teachers, and school administrators are responding to
  the outcomes and how they can start a revolution by incorporating this practice of self-determination as a way
  to improve the transition process towards successful outcomes.
