Presentation Title: Supplemental Educational Services: Research, Practice, and Student
Achievement
Low-income students are eligible to receive free, after-school Supplemental Educational Services (SES) if
their school fails to meet AYP for three consecutive years. We will first review SES descriptive statistics from
around the nation including uptake and attendance, and research on the connection between SES and
student achievement. Second, we will review results from an investigation into the relationship between SES
and student achievement in Metro-Nashville Public Schools.

Presentation Title: Math Challenge Tasks - Increasing Motivation for Learning and
Achievement in Mathmatics in Tennessee Schools.
In this session, ETS will team with local TN educators to discuss the SITES-M (Strengthening Instruction in the
TN Elementary Schools - Mathematics) Grant Project dedicated to strengthening mathematics instruction in
TN elementary schools. The instructional strategies used in this grant project are based on the formative
assessment techniques (developed by British researcher and educator, Dr. Dylan Wiliam) that take place day-
to-day, lesson-by-lesson and quite literally moment-by-moment. Dr. Wiliam's ideas were to train teachers to
do what the most skilled teachers do almost "instinctively;" that is, to ask questions and notice nonverbal cues
that give an idea of who understands the concepts being taught and to correct the deficiencies almost "on the
spot." Participants will be shown "Math Challenge" materials and how they are being used in classrooms, as
well as, receive information about free mathematics workshops available to TN educators.

Numerous studies have shown the positive effect of family involvement on student outcomes throughout the

Presentation Title: Thinking Out of the Box: Using Student Response Systems to Improve
Instruction
Today’s students are technologically oriented and love a challenge. Student Response Systems (SRS) can
provide this challenge. Through interactive slides containing question and answer choices, students become
involved in the learning while using this new, innovative technology. SRSs give students immediate feedback
on their answer choices and assist in the learning of required state standards while improving achievement.
An interactive presentation will be shown to allow participants to see how SRSs assist in learning.

Disproportionate identification of students with disabilities is a major focus in the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act of 2004. Districts identified with Significant Disproportionality (overrepresentation) are required
to allocate IDEA funds for Early Intervening Services in an effort to reduce the overrepresented disability

students who are not learning. Using a customized computer based program of credit recovery along with
