What is the Student Leadership Council?

As we continuously make improvements to the Aspire program, we are always mindful of feedback and suggestions.  The Student Leadership Council or SLC serves in that capacity.  Each year we provide a forum at statewide events for collaboration and communication with other teams.  One of our goals is to support and strengthen this connection throughout the school year, not just during these events.  At the same time, we want to increase student lead projects and the use of student voice during the service year.  The Student Leadership Council was created during the 2006-2007 year to support common goals of the program and to ensure communication between programs.  Furthermore, this provides another leadership opportunity for Aspire students.  The SLC is a representative body of Aspire students that work together, as well as with state coordinators.  Each Aspire team will select two students to serve on the SLC for the 2008-2009 service year.

What will the SLC member do?

Goals:

  • Provide a voice for local Aspire teams in a statewide platform.
  • Share resources, ideas, and collaborate with other teams.
  • Use the SLC as a resource for their team.
  • Inform other teams and state coordinators of current projects.
  • Provide input on statewide events.
  • Create new and innovative ideas for the Aspire program.

How are the representatives selected?

The selection of team representatives will be determined by each Aspire team.  Remember that these students will represent the entire team, so make sure that the team decides who will represent them.  The team members selected for this leadership role should have the time to commit, have a genuine desire to be on the council, and be able to represent all team members and sponsors at Aspire state-wide meetings. 

What are the responsibilities of council members?

  • SLC members will attend all Aspire team meetings and trainings.
  • SLC members will communicate at least 1 time per month with state coordinators and other SLC members via e-mail or the Aspire Blog (SLC members must have internet access and an active e-mail account).
  • SLC members will represent their team’s voice at all times (not just their own personal opinion).
  • SLC members will update their team on other projects from across the state, potential collaborations, additional resources, and act as a liaison between teams and state coordinators.
  • SLC members will communicate their program’s concerns, questions and suggestions to state coordinators.

What is the cost?

There is no extra cost for students on the leadership council.
