City, County to take over Title of Volunteer Site Land this Week

Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press -- 10/2/00
The Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press reported that the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County will jointly spend $7.5 million to purchase 940 acres of the 6,350-acre Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP), and they will use the land to attract a large manufacturing plant and associated jobs. According to the article, the land deal has been in the works for a number of years. Ultimately, the City and County hope to purchase more of the former ammunition plant, but significant cleanup issues associated with years of producing TNT still need to be addressed. The article reported that efforts are underway to address these issues, and that a survey of wells of approximately 8,000 nearby residences will be conducted to test for potential spreading of the plant's contaminated groundwater supply. According to the article, approximately 200 of the 940 acres that will be purchased by Chattanooga and Hamilton are contaminated.
