Congressional Panel Oks VAAP Transfer

Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press -- 3/9/00

The Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press reported that a congressional committee has approved the transfer of 940 acres of the former Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant to the Chattanooga and Hamilton County governments for industrial development. Under the agreement. The city and county will pay the federal government $7.5 million for the land, buildings and rail lines on the abandoned military site. According to the article the city and county have each paid $375,000 in earnest money to the federal government to buy the central portion of the site as it doesn't have the environmental problems of other parts of the Volunteer site.

The article quotes U.S. Representative Stephen Horn, R-Calif., chairman of the House subcommittee on Government Management, Information and Technology as saying, "After reviewing the transaction, it appears that the General Services Administration negotiated a sale that is in the best interest of all parties involved."
