County Oks Funds for Volunteer Site

Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press -- 12/2/99

The Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press reported that the Hamilton County commissioners voted to pay $3.75 million for their share of 940 acres of the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) which followed the Chattanooga City Council's move for a similar amount. The article reported that the two governments are going in together to buy the land at VAAP and will develop it for industrial and commercial growth.

According to the article, Hamilton County has been saving money for the purchase from sales of land in other county industrial parks and that Chattanooga's share will come from economic development funds generated from sales tax.

The article quoted Hamilton County Commissioner Harold Coker as calling the purchase "the most significant event in 50 years in Hamilton County."
