Sold Land Tops Army Volunteer Cleanup List
Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press -- 10/9/00The Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press reported that the 940-acre portion of the 6,350-acre Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) sold to the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County tops the Army's list of cleanup priorities for the entire plant. This portion was sold to the City and County under an early transfer authority, which is a mechanism used by the Federal government to transfer ownership of land to another entity but retains the liability for future potential cleanup. The article also mentioned that another of the Army's priorities with respect to cleanup of the plant property is to conduct a survey to determine if TNT and other chemicals present in the groundwater of the plant have found their way to groundwater supplies serving nearby residences. According the Article, the Army has set 2009 for its deadline to complete cleanup efforts associated with VAAP.
