Tom Eck is TDEC Deputy Commissioner for Operations. Tom previously served as TDEC's Assistant Commissioner for Administration and Fiscal Services Director. His veteran leadership for the department earned him high regard throughout TDEC and across state government for his knowledge, skill and temperament. Tom is responsible for the department's administrative functions in the following areas:
Tom has more than 40 years of experience in Tennessee State government finance and budgeting, including 20 years with Environment and Conservation as the finance and budget officer where he is responsible for all accounting and reporting, accounts payable, payroll, administration of all federal grant funds, all budget activities, as well as the billing and collecting of more than $60 million in various fees, purchasing for the department and contract development and review. He handles departmental budget revisions and expansion requests and represents the department before Legislative finance committees. Tom is a 1996 graduate of the Tennessee Government Executive Institute.
Over the years, Tom has developed a thorough knowledge and understanding of TDEC and the complex and varied funding issues. He has an excellent knowledge of state government finances and budgetary processes and uses that knowledge to help TDEC operate as efficiently as possible. His experience and knowledge have helped him to be an effective and recognized leader in the area of State financial management.
Tom began his career as an auditor with the Department of Human Services where he audited non-profit corporations that contracted with the State. Soon after, he was selected to work on the first joint state and federal audit of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. He is a member of the Nashville Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants.
Tom earned his degree in Business Administration, with a major in accounting, from Tennessee Technological University. He is married to Carol Eck, and they have one son, one daughter and one granddaughter.
