ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND CAR CARE
GO HAND-IN-HAND

AGENCIES PARTNER FOR CAR CARE NIGHT AT THE NASHVILLE SOUNDS
ON FRIDAY, JUNE 1

Nashville, Tenn. – The Department of Environment and Conservation is partnering with other agencies and organizations to raise awareness of environmental issues for Car Care Night at the Nashville Sounds on Friday, June 1, 2007, with pre-game festivities beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“This is a great time to learn more about used oil recycling and other issues related to car care that impact our natural environment,” said Paula Larson, coordinator of the Used Oil Program for the Department of Environment and Conservation. “I hope everyone will come out for a fun-filled night with the Nashville Sounds and learn how good car care practices make a difference in everything from car performance to the quality of our air and water.”

Education is a major focus of the Used Oil Program. Tennesseans who change their own oil, known as “do-it-yourselfers,” generate more than one million gallons of used oil each year. If not disposed of properly, used oil can interfere with the operation of sewer systems and cause water pollution. Used oil is a valuable resource, but only when properly collected and recycled.

Car Care Night will feature a used oil trivia contest with prizes to include free stays at Tennessee State Parks, a chance to win a new set of Bridgestone tires and gift certificates for auto care services from participating Tennessee Firestone Complete Auto Care Stores.

Jars of Clay will perform a pre-game concert and there will be a fireworks display after the game.

Participants in Car Care Night include Environment and Conservation’s Used Oil Program and the department’s Divisions of Air Pollution Control and Water Pollution Control, MTSU’s WaterWorks!, Metro Storm Water and the Town of Smyrna’s storm water program, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, Cumberland River Compact and Firestone Complete Auto Care.

The Used Oil Collection Act makes it unlawful for any person to discharge used oil where it may harm the environment. The state provides a toll-free telephone number as a resource to disseminate information concerning used oil collection centers at 1-800-287-9013. The hotline provides the locations and operating hours of collection centers, requirements for collection locations that accept commercial used oil and other information regarding used oil.
