The Tennessee Division of Archaeology co-sponsors the annual Current Research in Tennessee Archaeology (CRITA) event with Middle Tennessee State University and the Tennessee Archaeological Advisory Council to promote the distribution of information about archaeological research in the state over the past year. The event is typically held over two days (Friday and Saturday) in late January. Friday afternoons are reserved for the annual meeting of the Tennessee Archaeological Advisory Council as well as the Tennessee Council for Professional Archaeology. The Saturday program consists of all-day presentations on Tennessee archaeology.
Since the first Current Research event in 1989, the program has seen considerable growth from about a dozen presentations to 20+ presentations in recent years. Posters were added to the event in 2010, and have quickly become a popular format with 16 posters presented in 2014. The first few meetings were very informal, but since 1994 the organizers have printed program abstracts (see web link).
While professional archaeologists, avocational archaeologists, and students represent the primary targeted audience, the event is also intended to provide a showcase for the interested public to discover what has been "happening" in Tennessee Archaeology over the past year.
