HARPETH RIVER WATERSHED

The Harpeth River watershed includes parts of Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Hickman, Rutherford and Williamson Counties and drains 872 square miles before flowing into the Cumberland River. Part of the Harpeth River is designated a State Scenic River because of its pastoral and developed river areas. Many other streams in the watershed are also popular for recreational boating because of their scenic qualities.

Maps as early as the 1780s refer to the "Harpath River." A Chinese legend describes "Harpath" as a man who dwelled in a bountiful valley. Early settlers, reading such legends, may have named their beautiful valley after Harpath (later changed to Harpeth).
