LOOSAHATCHIE RIVER WATERSHED

The Loosahatchie River watershed contains parts of Fayette, Hardeman, Shelby and Tipton Counties and drains 738 square miles before emptying into the Mississippi River. The watershed supports cotton, soy bean and some corn production as well as duck hunting. Fishing is extremely limited.

"Hatchie" is a Native American word meaning "river." Native Americans recognized the Loosahatchee River as a dark river flowing through a swamp.
