POWELL RIVER WATERSHED
| The Powell River watershed contains parts of Claiborne, Hancock and Union Counties and drains 401 square miles before joining with the Clinch River at Norris Reservoir. Cattle and tobacco farming are common, as are fishing and boating. |

Ambrose Powell, a surveyor for the Transylvania Land Company, carved his name in a tree in the mid-1700s. A hunting party traveling from Virginia to Kentucky, seeing his name by the river, named it Powells River in 1770.
