Who We Are

A place of far-reaching influence

To provide this stable and secure environment, the executive branch of Tennessee State Government employs approximately 38,000 people in 22 departments and other agencies. At the hub of this network of service to Tennessee citizens is the Department of Finance and Administration, the chief corporate office of state government. In this role, F&A provides financial and administrative support services to the rest of state government, thus enabling them to providetheir services to the citizen and improve the quality of life for Tennesseans. We provide the grease to keep the wheels of government turning.

  • Each year F&A/Budget prepares and administers for the Governor the annual budget by estimating the revenue and expenditures required to run state government.
  • F&A/Accounts pays the state’s bills, maintains the financial records for state government, prepares the state’s financial statements, administers and develops the state fiscal policies, and administers payroll for state employees.
  • F&A/Office for Information Resources makes communication and exchange of information possible within state government. OIR operates the state’s data center and provides computer procurement and support services to state government. F&A/OIR also provides for state government telecommunications services and for further development and implementation of the state Management Information Systems Plan, to assure that state government stays on the cutting edge of computer technology.
  • F&A/Insurance Administration manages and administers the health insurance programs provided for state employees, local government employees and teachers.
  • F&A/Real Property Administration manages the state’s capital projects including the construction of prisons, educational facilities, and administrative facilities. This division also manages state government property, land, and personnel housing.
  • F&A/Resource Development and Support provides monitoring and support services to public and private agencies so that state government is able to take advantage of millions of dollars of resources available through various governmental grants and programs.

Administrative support. Dollars. Buildings. Without these and other services provided by F&A, state government could not operate as effectively and we would not have a stable and secure society in Tennessee.

Working for F&A is an opportunity to make a difference.
