FIRST LADY CONTE LEADS WALK FOR MEMPHIS CHILD ADVOCACY CENTER

First Lady Leads “AndreaWalks II” Events Across State During Child Abuse Prevention Month

Tennessee First Lady Andrea Conte will lead a series of “AndreaWalks II” events during the month of April to promote National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The goal of the walks are to raise awareness about child abuse prevention and to raise funds for Child Advocacy Centers that provide support programs for child abuse victims and their families.

In 2004, Andrea Conte, a longtime advocate for victims’ rights issues, launched a statewide initiative to raise awareness about child sexual abuse and to raise much-needed funds for Child Advocacy Centers. Through this initiative, the First Lady walked more than 600 miles between all of the Child Advocacy Centers across the state and raised approximately $1.3 million in cash and in-kind donations for these organizations.

Conte will launch April’s series of “AndreaWalks II” events on Saturday, April 1, 2006, in Memphis. The walk will include a 1.5 mile Family Fun Walk and a longer 4.5 mile Walk through the trails at Shelby Farms. The festivities will begin at 9:00 a.m. with walker registration taking place at the Shelby Farms Welcome Center. Opening remarks by First Lady Andrea Conte and Center Officials will be followed by a celebrity warm up that will get walker’s blood pumping in anticipation for the 10:00 a.m. start of Andrea Walks for Shelby County’s Children.

Additional “AndreaWalks II” events will take place in Athens, Chattanooga, Fayetteville, Nashville, Murfreesboro and Tullahoma. Interested participants in these locations may contact their local Child Advocacy Center for more information or to register.
