FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nashville, TN - Governor-elect Phil Bredesen today named businesswoman Gwendolyn S. Davis as the next commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services. Davis is president and chief consultant for Sims Associates, a Nashville-based consulting firm specializing in human-resources management, government compliance and corporate diversity programs. Among other services, Sims Associates helps government contractors comply with city, state and federal laws that encourage hiring women and minorities or sub-contracting with women- and minority-owned small businesses. "Gwen is a highly disciplined and efficient professional who will keep an eye on the bottom line," Bredesen said. "Her management skills are exactly the right fit for this vital department." The Department of General Services has a range of responsibilities throughout state government, including management of state-owned buildings, equipment procurement, vehicle maintenance and records management. It is the agency that provides the essential support services to all other areas of state government. "Strong management in state government starts at the Department of General Services," Davis said. "When we do our job well, it helps everyone in state government. I'm honored to accept this new challenge." Davis launched her consulting business in 1995 to help private companies and government agencies develop effective diversity policies. Before that, she managed diversity programs and human resources for top construction firms and government contractors including Fluor Corp., Parsons Brinckerhoff and Morris Knudsen. She has worked on major construction projects, including General Motors' Saturn Corp. plant in Spring Hill, the football stadium for the Tennessee Titans in Nashville and the U.S. Department of Energy's Superconducting Super Collider project in Texas. Davis, 54, is a Birmingham, Ala., native. She is a member of the Middle Tennessee Workforce Investment Board and a former member of the Metro Nashville Hospital Authority. She attended Miles College in Fairfield, Ala. ### |
