Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program
The Learning Center
The Learning Center is part of the psychosocial rehabilitation
program serving the patients of Memphis Mental Health Institute. The Center
occupies the entire third floor. The goal of the Learning Center is to
provide group oriented opportunities for patients to acquire the information
and skills they need to function more successfully in the community.
All patients attend the Learning Center morning, afternoon
and evening groups. Patients attend four groups/therapeutic sessions each
day. On the weekend, patients attend group sessions on their residential
units.
The Center offers over 200 groups each week. The Treatment
Teams enroll patients in groups based on their individual needs. The groups
include such topics as symptom control, medication education, relapse
prevention, health issues, communication skills, coping skills, anger
and aggression management, discharge and aftercare planning; activities
of daily living, development of leisure interests, exercise, participating
in treatment planning, overcoming substance abuse, depression management,
forensic issues, and personal development.
All clinical disciplines facilitate groups in the Learning
Center, including physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and
recreation therapists.
