MMHI: A Teaching Facility

Dr. Christie Brooks, medical resident, and students
Over the past 40+ years Memphis Mental Health Institute (MMHI) has served a very unique and diverse population of patients. It is this diversity that has attracted the attention of many health education institutions. MMHI is the training facility for many types of students. The University of Tennessee uses the facility to train about 50 medical students and at approximately 12 medical residents each year.

Memphis Mental Health presently serves student nurses from Northwest Mississippi Community College, Baptist College of Health Sciences, Southwest Tennessee Community College, University of Memphis, and The University of Tennessee. Nearly 150 student nurses receive their introduction to Psychiatric Nursing at MMHI.

Memphis Mental Health also contributes to the training of Social Work and Psychology students each year.

The Memphis Police Department also uses MMHI as a venue for training police officers to work on their Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). Officers receive lectures and training from a cross section of the facility staff. Psychology, Social Work, Pharmacy and the Staff Development Departments provide training for upwards of 200 officers yearly. In 2006 there were approximately 500 CIT Officers that received mental health training at MMHI.
