Samford University Awards Commissioner
Betts Healthcare Ethics Medal
NASHVILLE, TN
– Recognized for her contributions in the area of health
care ethics, Commissioner Virginia Trotter Betts recently
was awarded a Pellegrino Medal by Samford University’s
Healthcare Ethics and Law (HEAL) Institute based in Birmingham,
Ala.
Named after Edmund Pellegrino,
a noted Georgetown University bioethicist who is also
known as the father of the American bioethics movement,
the Pellegrino medal is awarded annually to individuals
who are nationally recognized as leaders for their contributions
to healthcare ethics.
Since its inception in 2001,
11 health care professionals have received the medal.
Other 2003 award winners recognized with Betts were Sandra
H. Johnson, Tenet Professor in Health Law and Ethics at
Saint Louis University; and Mickey C. Smith, Frederick
A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professor of Pharmacy Administration,
Professor of Management and Marketing, and Director, Center
for Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management at the University
of Mississippi.
