MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK
Nashville, TN
Mental illness affects the lives of many people throughout Tennessee. In fact, four of the 10 leading causes of disabilities in the United States are mental disorders. It is with this understanding that the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities in conjunction with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Tennessee and the Tennessee Coalition for Mental Health and Substance Abuse would like to announce Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) from October 6 to October 12, 2002.The current perception of mental illness focuses on effective treatment, rehabilitation and recovery along with the belief that adults and children with biological brain disorders have a right to fair, affordable and effective treatment.
Every day, barriers to mental illness recovery are falling, with more than 30 states adopting measures to ensure health insurance parity. Even so, there remains an urgency to overcome the stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental illness. This stigma continues to be the single most significant barrier to people seeking out the help they need.
Throughout MIAW, various statewide activities have been planned to increase greater awareness of mental illness and its effects along with the programs, services and supports that are in place for those with the condition.
