ROME NATIVE ELECTED TO NATIONAL POSTNASHVILLE, Tenn. – Joe Swinford, director of consumer affairs for the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities (TDMHDD) and son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Swinford of Rome, Ga., has been elected to a prestigious national position. Swinford has been appointed vice president of the National Association of Consumer/Survivor Mental Health Administrators (NAC/SMHA). NAC/SMHA represents state mental health department senior managers who are current or former recipients of mental health services. The association provides a forum for members to develop strategies for balancing the demands and expectations of the two constituencies they serve: consumers/survivors and mental health bureaucracies. As vice president Swinford will assist the president in promoting peer support services and other issues of importance to consumers. “We are very proud of Joe and this appointment is well deserved,” said TDMHDD Commissioner Virginia Trotter Betts. “Joe is a natural leader with vision. His skills and experience are invaluable to our department and now this organization will benefit from them as well.” Swinford has served as president of The Tennessee Government Executive Institute (TGEI) the past year. TGEI prepares Tennessee State senior executives for the future and enhances their effectiveness as managers by broadening their knowledge and perspectives of leadership principles and practices. At the conclusion of his tenure as president, Swinford will serve on the TGEI steering committee. Swinford is an eight-year veteran of the TDMHDD. He is a 1979 graduate
