Mental Health Assistance available for Tennesseans
in Wake of Attack on the Nation
Nashville, TN The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities is encouraging Tennesseans to seek the help they need to manage emotional traumas in wake of the attack on the nation.
Feelings of fear, depression, anxiety and anger are common following a tragedy of this magnitude. Disasters of this kind can have a debilitating effect. Left untreated the feelings and unresolved emotions associated with this tragic event can lead to more serious mental health issues. Studies indicate that children can be particularly vulnerable to feelings of sadness, fear and may be especially affected by these terrorist acts. Parents can be better equipped to help their children cope by seeking the help they need.
Elisabeth Rukeyser, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities said that without intervention tragic events such as this could have far reaching effects. She encouraged our citizens to seek the help they may need to move beyond this tragedy.
"To be intimidated by acts of terrorism can be detrimental to our mental health," Rukeyser said. "We must look out for the overall well-being of our friends, family and fellow Americans."
