  • Haslam Makes Case For Insure Tennessee To General Assembly

    Governor’s plan provides health care coverage to more Tennesseans at no cost to the state
    NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam this evening addressed a joint convention of the 109th General Assembly as legislators began an extraordinary legislative session to consider his Insure Tennessee plan. 
    The proposal, a two-year pilot program to provide market-based health care coverage to more than 250,000 Tennesseans who currently don’t have access to health insurance or have limited options, does not create any new taxes for Tennesseans and will not add any state cost to the budget.

  • Tennessee to Go in New Direction for Medicaid Eligibility Determination System

    Independent consultant report provides recommendations for next steps

    NASHVILLE – – The state of Tennessee’s Medicaid program, TennCare, announced plans to begin the process of selecting a new vendor for the continued development of the Tennessee Eligibility Determination System (TEDS). 

    After months of delays and missed benchmarks, the state hired an independent international consulting firm to perform an assessment of TEDS to review the project as it currently exists, identify project deficiencies, and identify potential risks to the TennCare program.  The assessment was also intended to provide the state with potential alternatives in order to successfully move forward with the development of the TEDS project.

  • Haslam Issues Proclamation For Special Session To Consider 'Insure Tennessee'

    Waiver amendment to be made available for a 30-day public comment period 
    NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today issued a proclamation convening an “extraordinary session” of the 109th General Assembly to consider “Insure Tennessee,” a two year pilot program to provide health care coverage to Tennesseans who do not currently have access to health insurance or have limited options.  The program is designed to reward healthy behaviors, promote personal responsibility and incentivize preventative care and healthy choices. 

    The proclamation calls for the special session to begin Monday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. CST for the legislature to consider a joint resolution authorizing the governor to implement Insure Tennessee.  The governor is scheduled to address the General Assembly at 6 p.m. CST that evening.

  • UT Study: Percentage of Uninsured in Tennessee at its Lowest in a Decade

    KNOXVILLE—The percentage of uninsured Tennesseans is at its lowest rate in a decade, according to a University of Tennessee, Knoxville, report released today.

    The report shows that 7.2 percent of Tennessee's 6.5 million residents are uninsured, a 25 percent decrease from last year. The report also shows that 2.4 percent of children in the state are without insurance, a 35 percent decrease from last year.

  • Tennessee Launches Additional Efforts in 2013 to Reduce the Number of Drug-Dependent Newborns

    NASHVILLE – In 2013, 921 newborns in Tennessee experienced withdrawal from drugs their mothers used while pregnant. Many people across Tennessee, including a group of state leaders, are working to reduce that number and in the past year launched several efforts to help prevent the suffering and expenses associated with the condition known as neonatal abstinence syndrome, or NAS.

  • TennCare Awards Contracts to Managed Care Organizations

    Nashville, Tenn. – The Bureau of TennCare awarded managed care contracts to AmeriGroup, BlueCare Tennessee and UnitedHealthcare.  The apparent winners of the three-year contracts with possible one-year extensions were announced on December 16, 2013.  Following a 10-day inspection period the contracts were officially awarded and signed on December 27, 2013, beginning a one-year transition period.

    Award Recognizes Organizational Excellence

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Bureau of TennCare has earned the Commitment Award in the annual Excellence in Tennessee recognition program administered by the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence (TNCPE). TNCPE is the only state-wide quality program and is patterned on the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, the national standard for recognizing organizational excellence.  TennCare will accept the award at the 21st annual Excellence in Tennessee Awards Banquet on February 19, 2014.

    “It is truly an honor to receive this award. We appreciate the work TNCPE did during their assessment of TennCare and look forward to continuing to achieve operational excellence,” said TennCare Director Darin Gordon.

  • TennCare Satisfaction Remains High in 2013

    KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Overall enrollee satisfaction with the TennCare program is at its highest level, according to a UT report released today.

    Ninety-five percent of TennCare recipients surveyed expressed satisfaction with the care they received, the highest level since the program’s inception.

    The state Medicaid program continues to see improvements from Managed Care Organizations
    NASHVILLE — The Bureau of TennCare today announced the results of the 2013 HEDIS/CAHPS Report: A Comparative Analysis of Audited Results from TennCare Managed Care Organizations (MCOs).  MCOs in Tennessee are required to report Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) information as part of the state’s accreditation mandate.  The information included in this report is for the previous 2012 calendar year.

  • TennCare Awards Dental Benefits Manager Contract to DentaQuest

    Bureau and new benefits manager expect smooth transition for members
    NASHVILLE – The Bureau of TennCare has selected DentaQuest USA Insurance Company as the new Dental Benefits Manager (DBM) for the state Medicaid program.  The three-year contract was awarded on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, signaling the start of a five-month readiness period.  The transition from TennDent, TennCare’s current DBM, to DentaQuest will take effect October 1, 2013.
