TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE PROVIDES ANALYSIS OF
APRIL 2005 COLLECTIONS
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - April 2005 collections of the Tennessee Department of Revenue were $1,152,600,040, an increase of $58,787,297 or 5.4 percent over April 2004 collections.
Sales and use tax collections were $528,462,318, up $26,374,889 or 5.3 percent over April 2004 collections. The retail trade group was up 3.6 percent over last year's collections. Miscellaneous retail stores (up 6.3 percent), general merchandise stores (up 4.4 percent), auto dealers and service stations (up 3 percent), building materials stores (up 3.9 percent), apparel and accessories stores (up 6.7 percent), and eating and drinking places (up 2.4 percent) accounted for most of the increase. Sales tax receipts from the services group were up 10.2 percent, with increased collections in business services (up 26.7 percent) providing most of the increase. Collections from the non-retail, non-services group were up 2.2 percent, with increases in manufacturing (up 15.7 percent), wholesale trade (up 6 percent), and transportation (up 71.4 percent) providing most of the change. The communications sector (down 16.1 percent) was the only sector in the non-retail, non-services group with significant declines in collections. Consumer use tax collections were down 10.7 percent from collections in the same period last year.
Franchise and excise tax collections were $316,435,264, up $1,483,572 or 0.5 percent when compared to April 2004 collections. Separately, franchise tax collections were $125,173,345, up $1,337,547 or 1.1 percent over last year. Excise tax collections were $191,261,919, an increase of $146,025 or 0.1 percent over April 2004 collections.
Individual income tax collections increased $15,393,104 or 14.2 percent over last year's collections to $123,826,583.
Motor vehicle fuel tax collections were $17,173,813, an increase of $5,468,085 or 46.7 percent over last year's collections.
Collections from the inheritance, gift and estate taxes were $17,351,162, an increase of $3,988,992 or 29.9 percent compared to collections in the same period one year ago.
Collections from the privilege taxes were $24,802,969, $3,724,342 or 17.7 percent higher than April 2004 collections.
Tobacco tax collections were $12,291,260, an increase of $2,361,131 or 23.8 percent over last year's collections.
TVA payments in-lieu-of gross receipts taxes were $18,038,751, an increase of $1,282,969 or 7.7 percent over April 2004 payments.
Motor vehicle registrations were $25,375,323, a decrease of $2,058,644 or 7.5 percent when compared to last year's collections.
The Department of Revenue collects approximately 92 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2003-2004 fiscal year, the department collected $9.1 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, $1.6 billion of local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2003-2004 fiscal year. Besides collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance.
