TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE PROVIDES ANALYSIS OF
NOVEMBER 2005 COLLECTIONS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - November 2005 collections of the Tennessee Department of Revenue were $735,407,189, an increase of $82,228,550 or 12.6 percent over November 2004 collections.

Sales and use tax collections were $515,242,291, up $28,599,327 or 5.9 percent over November 2004 collections. The retail trade group was up 3.2 percent over last year's collections. Building materials stores (up 16.2 percent), miscellaneous retail stores (up 7.2 percent), general merchandise stores (up 4.5 percent), eating and drinking places (up 5.6 percent), furniture stores (up 11.6 percent), and apparel and accessory stores (up 11.2 percent) accounted for most of the increase. Auto dealers and service stations (down 6.8 percent) and food stores (down 5.4 percent) posted declines in sales and use tax collections for the month. Sales tax receipts from the services group were up 7.1 percent, with increased collections in business services (up 16.6 percent) leading the group. Collections from the non-retail, non-services group were up 13.3 percent, with increases in the wholesale trade (up 17.2 percent), manufacturing (up 20.8 percent), and electricity, gas and sanitary services (up 15.2 percent) sectors accounting for most of the increase. Consumer use tax collections were up 73.5 percent over November 2004 collections.

Franchise and excise tax collections were $51,369,699, up $37,645,592 or 274.3 percent when compared to November 2004 collections. Separately, franchise tax collections were $18,229,552, up $10,492,019 or 135.6 percent over last year. Excise tax collections were $33,140,148, up $27,153,573 or 453.6 percent over November 2004 collections.

Collections from the inheritance, gift and estate taxes were $12,135,531, an increase of $9,365,617 or 338.1 percent compared to collections in the same period one year ago.

Collections from the privilege taxes were $22,333,957, a 20.5 percent or $3,803,430 increase over total privilege taxes collected in the same period last year.

Motor vehicle fuel tax collections were $16,833,002, an increase of $1,572,475 or 10.3 percent over collections in the same period last year.

Motor vehicle registrations were $16,325,207, decreasing $1,141,415 or 6.5 percent from November 2004.

The Department of Revenue collects approximately 92 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2004-2005 fiscal year, the department collected $9.6 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, $1.7 billion of local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2004-2005 fiscal year. Besides collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance.
