Get to Know Revenue
Tennessee's chief tax collector, the Department of Revenue administers and collects taxes and fees associated with state tax and motor vehicle title and registration laws. The Department of Revenue collects about 87 percent of total state tax revenue, along with taxes for local, county and municipal governments. The Department also apportions revenue collections for distribution to various state funds and local governments.
More than 900 people work for the Department of Revenue to:
- educate and assist taxpayers,
- administer the state’s motor vehicle title and registration laws,
- conduct tax research and economic analysis,
- enforce tax laws fairly and consistently, and
- process returns and other documentation.

- Taxpayer Education and Assistance
The Department of Revenue is available to assist taxpayers:
- Online. Our website offers vital tax information, forms and publications, collections information and information on electronic filing. Additionally, taxpayers can search for information or submit a request to the Department through our Revenue Help application.
- By phone. Taxpayers can call (615) 253-0600 Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time.
- In person. Offices throughout the state accept walk-ins from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. local time each business day.
- By email. Taxpayers can subscribe to our listserv to receive website updates, as well as other announcements and information.
- Through seminars. The Speakers Bureau at (615) 532-4975 offers informative seminars for taxpayers and tax practitioners.
- By video. Instructional videos offer help with forms, electronic filing processes and other tax-related issues. Our videos can be found in the Doing Business section of our website.
- Title and Registration
The Department of Revenue’s Vehicle Services Division provides motor vehicle title and registration services for passenger and commercial motor vehicles, motorcycles, ATVs, trailers and mobile homes.
Working with county clerks around the state, the Department registers more than six million vehicles and issues about two million new titles each year.
- Research Assistance
The Department of Revenue’s Research Division:
- conducts tax research and economic analysis for state and local government,
- estimates potential revenue impacts of proposed legislation,
- develops state tax revenue forecasts, and
- evaluates comparative tax policies to determine fiscal effects.
- Enforcement and Compliance
Three arms of the Department of Revenue oversee tax law enforcement and compliance:
- The Audit Division, which reviews taxpayer records to determine compliance with state tax laws and educates taxpayers about tax requirements.
- The Collection Services Division, which manages, tracks and collects delinquent taxpayer accounts.
- The Special Investigations Section, which detects, investigates and seeks prosecution of tax-related fraud.
- Revenue Processing
The Department’s Processing Division handles approximately 1.15 million checks and 5.8 million documents, including vehicle titles, vehicle registrations and tax returns, annually. This division also:
- handles returns and payments filed electronically, and
- performs lockbox services for five other state agencies.
