Graduated Driver License Program

Between the Barrels Teen Driver Safety
Teen Driver Safety

What is the Graduated Driver License Program?

Tennessee began the Graduated Driver License Program on July 1, 2001 to incrementally teach young drivers how to drive by guiding their progression toward full, unrestricted driving. The graduated program also increases the young driver's awareness of the responsibility entrusted to those granted the privilege of driving. By increasing awareness through requiring minimum levels of driving experiences and safe driving history before allowing teenage drivers to receive a "full fledged" Class D driver license. Motor vehicle crashes are the major cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 20. By requiring more supervised practice, the State of Tennessee hopes to save lives and prevent tragic injuries. The procedures for obtaining a driver license for those under the age of 18 are covered in Chapter Three of the Driver License Handbook.  Review Chapter Three (pdf) of the Driver License Handbook for additional information on the Graduated Driver License Program.
