Handgun Safety School Firing Range Requirements

  1. Shall be adequate size to safely accommodate the number of students being trained, and in no case shall the number of students on the firing line exceed the number of established firing positions.
  2. Ranges are to be constructed in a manner as to ensure the safety of the students, instructors, spectators, and all others in the immediate area.
  3. Access to the range shall be limited, with controlled points of ingress.
  4. Warning signs, flags, lights, and/or audible devices shall be utilized to ensure the safety of others.
  5. There shall be adequate lighting, rest rooms, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit on site.
  6. The range shall be ADA accessible.
  7. There Shall be ready access to a telephone or other communication devices in the event of an emergency situation.
  8. All ranges shall comply with all applicable local county and municipal ordinances.
  9. All targets shall be spaced at least two (2) yards apart from each other.
  10. All ranges shall have a berm. This is an embankment for preventing bullets to continue in flight and stopped by penetrating and being trapped in a dike or ridge (as of earth). The maintained minimum height after settling of twelve (12) feet with a thickness to prevent bullets from exiting. The berm shall not exceed ten (10) yards from the rear of the target. The base of the berm shall be a minimum of five (5) feet from the center of mass of the target.
  11. Each Handgun Safety School must obtain, maintain, and provide evidence of financial responsibility as required in the rule and regulations 1340-2-3-.09.
