The Department of Safety has two commissioned law enforcement divisions:

• Tennessee Highway Patrol
• Criminal Investigations Division

In 1999, both divisions received national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA ). The Department of Safety is one of only a few departments in the nation to simultaneously achieve accreditation for all its law enforcement divisions within a one-year period.
