In Tennessee, there were 12 fatal crashes resulting in 13 deaths, yielding a fatality rate of one death per six hours.

  • Seven crashes were single vehicle crashes; Five were multiple vehicle crashes.

Two (15%) of the fatalities occurred in alcohol-related crashes.

Nine of the people killed were vehicle occupants.

  • Five of the nine (56%) were not wearing safety restraints.
  • Three of the five (60%) was ejected from the vehicle.
  • No child passengers requiring child restraint devices were killed.

Two motorcyclists were killed; both were wearing a helmet.

Two pedestrians were killed.

LOWEST DEATHS

In 2002, five people were killed in traffic crashes in Tennessee during a 78-hour Memorial Day holiday period, yielding a fatality rate of one death per 15.0 hours and 36 minutes.


The 2004 Memorial Day holiday period will begin 6 p.m. Friday, May 28, and continue until midnight Monday, May 31. This will be a 78-hour holiday.
