Charged with increasing public awareness of highway safety issues, the Safety Education division conducts a wide range of activities aimed at saving lives and reducing injuries on Tennessee’s roads. Knowledgeable about numerous traffic safety topics and techniques, THP’s Safety Education Lieutenants are meeting with schools, civic organizations, businesses, and others to improve highway safety throughout the state. THP is highly active in D.A.R.E. -- the international program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.
The D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to be taught by law enforcement officers whose training and experience provides them with the knowledge and insight to best address the topic with kids. Meet Trooper Tenny C. Bear! While Tenny’s fellow Tennessee State Troopers patrol the roads keeping the people and communities of Tennessee safe, Trooper Tenny teaches people, especially kids, the important steps to take to protect themselves. From how to buckle up to boarding a school bus to child restraint instruction, Tenny’s goal is to save lives and prevent injuries.

Ollie Otter’s child booster seat safety program teaches Tennessee school kids child booster seat laws and regulations for car booster seat requirements in nation's first statewide seatbelt and booster seat education campaign.
Between the Barrels![]()
Between the Barrels is a teen safety education program geared toward sophomores and juniors in high school. The program includes a high-tech, interactive presentation designed to reduce the chances of young drivers being involved in dangerous work zone accidents.
Tennessee Citizens Corps![]()
Tennessee Citizen Corps is a grassroots initiative encouraging citizenry to get involved in homeland security and emergency preparedness efforts within their local area. Five programs exist under the Citizen Corps Umbrella: Community Emergency Response Training (CERT), Neighborhood Watch (NW), Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), and Fire Corps (FC).
