AN ACT To amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Sections 49-1-608 and 49-6-6001(a)(1), relative to subjects required to be tested in public high schools and for graduation.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-1-608, is amended by deleting from the first sentence the words "all academic subjects for which appropriate metrics can be obtained from group administered tests" and substituting in lieu thereof the words "subjects designated by the State Board of Education and approved by the Education Oversight Committee"; deleting from the fourth sentence the words "all academic subjects" and substituting in lieu thereof the words "the designated subjects"; and deleting from the fifth sentence the words "non-academic subjects" and substituting in lieu thereof the words "other subjects designated by the State Board of Education and approved by the Education Oversight Committee".
SECTION 2. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 49-6-6001(a)(1), is amended by deleting the word "test" and substituting in lieu thereof the word "tests"; deleting the words "and to take effect in school year 1993-94"; and by adding the following new sentences:
"Students may take each of the required tests at any administration and in any order upon completion of the required coursework. The State Board of Education may establish by regulation additional requirements for students who do not pass the required tests. Such requirements may include remedial work that may be counted only for elective credit toward graduation."
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
