The most important component of getting needed healthcare is you! Contact your healthcare provider or your county health department and tell them what you need or voice questions you have. Chances are the appropriate resources are available—just see below! This entire directory of resources paves the way for you to be your own advocate.  You are the best person to speak for you, and the best person to speak for your children, so speak up!

Accessing Health Services

Each county in Tennessee has at least one health department. Find yours here and discover the range of services offered, including but not limited to primary care, family planning, STD testing, and nutrition counseling.

According to the Surgeon General’s office, the most common chronic condition of childhood is dental caries—cavities! Find a public dental clinic in your area of Tennessee.

If you qualify for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, each county health department can perform the screening.  Other screening sites are available in some metropolitan areas—scroll down to peruse the full healthcare resources for your county.

Family Planning

The family planning program provides education and counseling, medical examinations, laboratory tests, and contraceptive supplies for any person of reproductive age. Services are available in all 95 counties at 129 clinic sites which include all local health departments, planned parenthood clinics, some student health clinics, and primary care clinics.  See the county resource list below for clinics.

For Mothers and Mothers-to-be

Every county health department provides basic prenatal services, but call or visit your health department to discover if full obstetric care is offered.

Every county health department also offers the Women, Infants, and Childrenprogram to ensure good nutrition for mothers and children up to five years. Some counties host WIC clinics in addition to health departments—scroll down for county by county resources and peruse the full healthcare resources to see if your county is one of them.

The Help Us Grow (HUG) program is an additional service coordinated through the county health departments to maximize women’s and children’s (up to six years old) access to medical, social, and educational resources.
