Volunteer State Pays Tribute to Its Military Heritage Through Honor Vote Program

For more than 200 years, Tennessee has been known as "the Volunteer State." That nickname dates back to the War of 1812, when the state contributed thousands of volunteers toward the war effort. The tradition was reinforced a few decades later in the Mexican War when the state produced  more than10 times the number of recruits Washington requested - and that proud tradition still lives on today.

Former State Representative Barrett Appointed to State Election Commission

Donna Barrett

Former State Rep. Donna Barrett has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Tennessee State Election Commission. Commissioner Barrett, principal of The Barrett Group, is a recognized leader in cost control strategies. Prior to her founding The Barrett Group, she spent 10 years serving as a Tennessee state representative, representing Rutherford County.

The commission is responsible for appointing local election commissioners in all of Tennessee’s 95 counties, then monitoring the activities and performance of those individual county election commissions.

The Division of Elections is headed by the Coordinator of Elections, Mark Goins, who oversees the election process in the State of Tennessee. The Coordinator of Elections works directly with ninety-five (95) local county election commissions, candidates and the public on election related issues.  The county election commissions are appointed by the State Election Commission.  There are ninety-five (95) county election commission offices throughout the State.
