Honor Vote Program

The Honor Vote program has given Tennesseans an opportunity to dedicate their vote to active-duty military personnel and veterans. The program was an overwhelming success in its inaugural request for dedications, having received nearly 3,500 submissions.

While the program is currently closed for new entries, the list of honored soldiers and veterans is still accessible for viewing.

The program will accept dedications again during the 2014 election.

Secretary Hargett Announces September as National Voter Registration Month
(Published: August 28, 2013)

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett joins fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in reminding citizens that September is National Voter Registration Month. Secretary Hargett is working with county election officials to make eligible voters aware of registration deadlines and requirements, as well as promoting voter registration.

"The right to vote should never be taken for granted," said Secretary Hargett, who is also president of NASS. "I encourage all eligible United States citizens to register if they haven’t already. Also, it’s important for people who have moved to make sure voter registration records are updated with their current address information."

Secretary Hargett Announces Changes to Photo ID Law
(Published: April 25, 2013)

The General Assembly amended Tennessee’s voter photo identification law during its recently-concluded legislative session. Amendments sponsored by Senator Bill Ketron (R-Murfreesboro) and Representative Susan Lynn (R-Mount Juliet) seek to clarify and strengthen the law that was successfully implemented during the 2012 election cycle.

Voters may no longer use photo IDs issued by other states as acceptable forms of identification when voting in person. This change mirrors similar laws in other states, including Indiana. Indiana’s photo ID law has been upheld by the United States Supreme Court.
